County Life & Four Seasons of Patterson Park

It’s official … My wife and I (and our two frisky cats) have replaced concrete with grass, light poles with trees and sirens with chirping birds, as we’ve picked up shop and moved from Baltimore city to the Howard County.

Although only a few minute ride to the city, one thing we’ll miss most about our city life was our proximity to Patterson Park, as I’m sure my regular visitors know since I’ve captured many scenes of one of Baltimore’s best parks. So, today I reflect back on a few of those images … And bring you ‘Four Seasons of Patterson Park’ …

Zion National Park at Sunrise

If you’ve never visited Zion National Park, I highly recommend putting it on your short list of places to see. The river made valley floor creates a narrow, winding passage between the massive rock cliffs, creating one dramatic scene after another. Below is an image taken right after sunrise, creating a dramatic look to the sky and cliffs. I converted the final image into a sepia tone, to help match the feeling of the location.

Stephanie + Zack | Sneak Peek | Grey Rock Mansion

Stephanie and Zack selected a beautiful location to get married (Grey Rock Mansion) and were graced with a picture perfect spring day to tie the knot. They chose to cover the walk walk in rose pedals, which made for some great images of the happy couple during their ceremony.

Megan + Dan | Real Wedding | 1840s Ballroom

Megan and Dan had a beautiful wedding day with lots of smiles and laughter. Their ceremony took place at Our Lady of the Field and their reception was smack in the middle of downtown Baltimore, at the 1840′s Ballroom, within the City of Lights room.

Colorful Mist

The mist of a raging waterfall can sometimes produce an amazing show of colors. If the sun is at a correct angle, its rays break through the droplets of water, creating a dancing flow of color along the waterfalls edge. And since the scene changes constantly, it’s always a fun thing to view and photograph.

Below is one of a series of images I captured at Vernal Falls in Yosemite National Park …

Mittens By Moonlight

As many folks understand in concept, but sometimes not as much within photography … The moon is the sun … In terms of light (I know my wife and my good friends in Oregon just got a small laugh as I’ve made that comment many times when doing night photography). And as I’ve discussed before on my blog, the moon’s albedo (percentage of light reflecting the sun) is roughly 7%, which can be a great light source when photographing at night. In the image below, the light coming from camera left is the rising moon, which helps illuminate the monument valley landscape, while still giving me the opportunity to show the night stars.

Casey + Dan | Engagement | Cylburn Arboretum

Casey and Dan chose a gorgeous Baltimore location of the Cylburn Arboretum to do their engagement session. They were both full of great energy and we were able to capture lots of fun images of the happy couple enjoying their time in the beautifully landscaped grounds.

The also brought along their loving dog to capture some images of the entire family, so we started with the three of them and then retreated back into the woods to complete their imagery among the colorful canopy. Below are a few highlight images from their session …

Photographing the wedding party tends to always be a fun part of any wedding that I cover, as I enjoy capturing the energy and excitement that the group brings to the celebration. And on Megan and Dan’s special day, the wedding party was ready to … well, party.

Coliseum | Rome

The ancient ruins of Rome’s Coliseum is a site that is not only amazing and unworldly, but thought provoking and troubling. The size of today’s modern day stadiums, the massive structure showcases man’s ability to build sound, structural buildings in an era long ago, while reminding us that the content of yesterday was much different than modern day games, as it saw many gruesome acts that still make you shake your head in wonder.

I converted the scene into black and white, to match the feeling that surrounds the location.

Megan and Dan were in great spirits throughout their entire wedding day, including when they pulled out a few signs to capture some fun images of them and their wedding party.

I’m always a big fan when couples come into their wedding day with images that they have in mind or have seen somewhere on the internet. So, when I heard that they wanted to do a ‘and they lived happily ever after’ type image, I knew the stairs at the 1980′s ballroom (their reception location) would work perfectly.
